Explore BMW M4 CSL: rarity, history, specifications, FAQs and credited photos.

The G82 BMW M4 CSL revived BMW’s lightweight performance badge for a thousand-car worldwide series in 2022. Its two-seat configuration and substantial weight reduction distinguish it from both the regular M4 Competition and the later all-wheel-drive M4 CS.

Origins and history
The unveiling coincided with BMW M’s fiftieth-anniversary year. Rather than relying only on celebratory trim, the CSL expressed the occasion through construction and performance priorities. Its place in the model history is therefore defined by how it changes the coupé’s configuration as well as by its limited series.
Design and engineering
BMW’s global reference is 405 kW or 550 metric horsepower from a twin-turbo inline-six. An eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox drives the rear wheels. The factory describes a 100 kg reduction against its stated M4 Competition reference, achieved through a collection of changes rather than one carbon component.
Rear-seat deletion makes the purpose visible as soon as the doors open. Lightweight front seats, chassis revisions and focused equipment support that direction. These features work together, so a carbon bonnet or CSL-style boot lid fitted to another G82 cannot reproduce the original model identity. The two-seat layout is especially useful when comparing it with the four-seat M4 CS.
Why this BMW matters
CSL has a history within BMW, but the initials do not make every bearer the same vehicle. The E46 M3 CSL, the modern M4 CSL and the fifty-car 3.0 CSL offer different interpretations of a lightweight idea. Their engines, gearboxes and construction stories should stay attached to their respective eras.
The M4 CSL’s significance is its unusually clear set of priorities. It gives up rear accommodation and pursues reduced mass while retaining a road-car identity. That can be explained without claiming a private driving experience or treating a launch performance figure as a universal result under all conditions. A careful record identifies BMW’s measured references and lets the engineering configuration explain the car.
Identity and original specification
Factory build records are the foundation of authentication. Check the model identity and reconcile the original seats, body components, drivetrain and cabin with the specific chassis. Replacement tyres, brakes or carbon parts should be recorded as changes, particularly where a car has seen track use.
The thousand figure is the worldwide announced customer series, with regional allocations contained within it. The profile year is 2022, while a market’s model-year label or later registration may differ. The factory photographs show the actual CSL configuration; the 2024 M4 CS and the bespoke 3.0 CSL are not used as interchangeable illustrations.
Frequently asked questions
How rare is the M4 CSL — G82?
BMW announced a worldwide series of 1,000. Regional allocations are included in that offering rather than added to it.
What makes this version different?
Two seats, targeted lightweight construction and model-specific chassis changes define the CSL alongside its uprated turbocharged six-cylinder engine.
Which year belongs in the vehicle record?
The car debuted in May 2022, with production scheduled from July. Individual market model-year labels should remain separately identified.
Is it the same as other similarly named BMWs?
It is distinct from the four-seat, all-wheel-drive G82 M4 CS and the bespoke fifty-car 3.0 CSL, despite related lightweight heritage.
How should an example be authenticated?
Confirm the factory CSL identity and inspect the complete original configuration, including seating and carbon components. Replacement parts should be documented.
What do the photographs show?
The photos show the actual M4 CSL factory car, with its characteristic body and two-seat performance specification.
