Origins and history

Its place in the catalogue depends on that full identity. It is not the earlier E92 M3 GTS with a new name, and it is not a regular M4 carrying aftermarket aero. The F82 GTS has a specific powertrain, chassis and lightweight programme, with a count attached to the factory edition.

Design and engineering

The inline-six uses water injection to manage the thermal conditions of the intake charge and support the higher output. BMW’s global figures are 368 kW, 500 metric horsepower and 600 Nm. A seven-speed double-clutch transmission is calibrated for this specification. The factory’s acceleration claim is 3.8 seconds to 100 km/h, with a 305 km/h maximum.

The engineering story extends beyond the engine: lightweight components and adjustable track-focused hardware support the purpose of the car. These are interconnected choices. Raising engine output on a regular M4 would not reproduce the GTS’s complete design, just as copying its wing would not establish original edition membership.

Why this BMW matters

The GTS demonstrates how a limited production programme can carry technology and a particular use case. Water injection is the distinctive technical headline, but the broader appeal comes from the way the factory committed the car to a sharper brief. It makes sense as a comparison point with the M3 CRT, M3 CSL and later CS models, while retaining its own engineering character.

The 700 figure is the announced worldwide series limit. US allocations are subsets of that programme. A catalogue should not imply that the published launch cap is an independently audited final assembly tally, nor should it add market quotas to the global figure. Keeping the count’s status visible allows readers to compare like with like.

Identity and original specification

Verify original GTS membership through BMW build documents, then examine the car’s key mechanical and body equipment. Service history for the water-injection system and any track use belongs in an individual example’s record. Those records explain condition and originality more effectively than an unsupported claim that a car has never been driven hard.

The year fields separate the 2015 announcement from the 2016 reference year. Photographs also need the F82 identity: earlier M3 GTS imagery would confuse the generations. This package uses exact model photographs and preserves the source captions and photographer/provider credits.

Frequently asked questions

How rare is the M4 GTS — F82?

The factory announced a 700-car worldwide series. It is an edition limit, not a tally independently audited here.

What makes this version different?

Water injection, factory output and the integrated lightweight/track specification define it.

Which year belongs in the vehicle record?

Use 2016 as the production reference and store 2015 as the announcement year.

Is it the same as other similarly named BMWs?

No. E92 M3 GTS, F82 M4 GTS and DTM Champion editions have distinct identities and counts.

How should an example be authenticated?

Check original GTS build documents and inspect the complete equipment, including the water-injection installation.

What do the photographs show?

The photos show the F82 M4 GTS, rather than the earlier M3 GTS or a modified standard M4.
