The 905 took Peugeot into the new 3.5-litre era of sports-prototype racing and delivered Le Mans victories in 1992 and 1993. Its changing aerodynamics and high-revving V10 made it a very different machine from the brand's rally cars. This programme profile also covers the inventory's 1992 winner and 1993 one-two-three rows, consolidating them here to avoid overlapping profiles for the same works-car history.

A new endurance-racing commitment

Peugeot's own history places the 905 campaign between 1990 and 1993. The project entered a demanding competitive landscape while regulations moved towards a new engine formula. It was not a road-car homologation exercise or a customer trim called 905. The carbon-bodied prototype and V10 drivetrain belonged to a dedicated works effort, whose development needs and competition identity must remain separate from Peugeot's normal production-car families.

Why configuration dates matter

The car evolved substantially during the programme, particularly in aerodynamic treatment. Peugeot's account distinguishes front and rear wing arrangements and the changes used for Le Mans. A single image therefore cannot stand for every season's specification. The broader design lesson is how a fast prototype was adapted to a long-distance event, with speed, efficiency and reliability needing to work together. Engine or aero figures should always identify the season and version they describe.

The 1992 breakthrough

The manufacturer identifies Derek Warwick, Yannick Dalmas and Mark Blundell with the 1992 Le Mans victory. That year also brought the manufacturers' world title. The two achievements are related but not identical: one is a particular race result, the other a championship outcome across the season. This profile records both while leaving a winning chassis's construction number and later history unassigned unless supported by individual factory or event documentation.

The 1993 one-two-three finish

A sweep of the first three places at Le Mans in 1993 created the programme's defining final image. Peugeot's historical material treats it as a team achievement, not as three separate retail editions. The inventory's row for those cars is consolidated into this programme record alongside the 1992 winner row. That prevents the same racing history being repeatedly counted, while retaining the different years, crews and results for readers following the development of the 905.

A programme count is not a chassis register

Race entries, development cars, replacement structures and later museum displays are different categories of evidence. The selected manufacturer narrative establishes the programme and major results but does not provide a complete reconciled production census. The 905 Spider, despite the shared number, is a different vehicle and is not represented by this profile. For any surviving works prototype, original build records, technical configuration and custody history remain essential to an individual-car account.

Rarity and production scope

Verified works 905 programme. The 1992 winner and 1993 podium rows are consolidated references, not additional profiles or additive production batches. Race results do not authenticate an individual surviving chassis. No completed-build total is assigned.

This is an Archive record. Concepts, restored heritage vehicles, works cars and competition programmes are not added to customer road-production totals. A programme profile does not establish how many physical chassis were made, and repeated exhibition appearances do not create additional vehicles.

Frequently asked questions

Are the 1992 winner and 1993 podium separate editions here?

No. Their inventory references are retained within this one non-overlapping programme profile.

Is a 905 Spider the same prototype?

No. The shared number does not establish the same racing vehicle or specification.

What is the production-count boundary for this profile?

Verified works 905 programme. The 1992 winner and 1993 podium rows are consolidated references, not additional profiles or additive production batches. Race results do not authenticate an individual surviving chassis. No completed-build total is assigned.
