The Nissan Saurus began as a physical open-sports concept at the 1987 Tokyo Motor Show and subsequently developed into a NISMO one-make racing programme. The inventory's 1989 concept date merges those stages, so this profile uses 1987 for the concept origin and documents the racing transition separately. It does not claim that the show car and every later racer were one chassis. The related competition photograph is clearly labelled as a later derivative rather than the original concept.

The original show-car idea

NISMO's history identifies the Saurus at the 1987 Tokyo Motor Show and describes the strong response to its two-seat open-sports appearance. Nissan's heritage gallery also places the physical Saurus in that exhibition context. Those records establish the concept stage. They do not justify assigning the production number of later racing cars to the original show vehicle or claiming that a single photographed derivative is the unchanged concept chassis.

NISMO: Saurus Cup and programme chronology

The route to one-make competition

NISMO records the announcement of a racing plan in 1988 and the start of the Saurus Cup in 1989. This chronology explains why both years recur in descriptions of the model. They refer to different programme milestones. The open-sports styling became the basis for a dedicated racing machine, giving the Saurus a practical motorsport life beyond the display stand while changing the meaning of the vehicle's identity.

The NS89 and subsequent development

NISMO describes the early NS89 with a longitudinally installed CA16DE in a mid-engine layout. Later NS91 and NS93 developments changed equipment and, eventually, engine and body treatment. The manufacturer's account is valuable because it keeps these stages distinct. A race-car table for a later Saurus cannot automatically be used as the technical specification of the 1987 concept, even when the general silhouette and name remain related.

Why Saurus Jr. is not another name for the concept

The smaller Saurus Jr. was a separate lower-cost development with its own engine and construction history. Nissan's English heritage page headed Saurus actually describes a 1991 Saurus Jr. example. That page is useful for family context, but its specifications must not be attached to the original concept. This is a case where reading the model code and detailed page heading matters more than trusting a short URL or a search-result title.

The archive boundary

This profile consolidates the concept origin and its directly related competition story to keep the sparse inventory row meaningful without multiplying unproven individual chassis. It assigns no exact concept-build count and no total spanning every Saurus generation. A specific racer should receive an individual competition record only when its model, chassis identity and event history are supported. The programme profile provides context while leaving that future vehicle-level work open.

Rarity and production scope

Verified physical concept and associated competition programme. The profile consolidates the inventory's imprecise concept/racing chronology without asserting shared chassis identity. No one-unit concept total or all-generation race-car total is assigned. Saurus Jr. is a distinct related model, not a synonym.

This is an Archive record. Concepts, restored heritage vehicles, works cars and competition programmes are not added to customer road-production totals. A programme profile does not establish how many physical chassis were made, and repeated exhibition appearances do not create additional vehicles.

What the photograph represents

NISMO-built Saurus racing derivative dated 1989 by the photographer. Related competition-family reference; this is not presented as the original 1987 concept.

Frequently asked questions

Why use 1987 rather than 1989?

The physical concept appeared in 1987; the Saurus Cup began in 1989.

Is the Saurus Jr. specification the concept’s specification?

No. It describes a separate later derivative and is not backdated onto the show car.

What is the production-count boundary for this profile?

Verified physical concept and associated competition programme. The profile consolidates the inventory's imprecise concept/racing chronology without asserting shared chassis identity. No one-unit concept total or all-generation race-car total is assigned. Saurus Jr. is a distinct related model, not a synonym.
