The Nissan MID4-II brought a twin-turbo V6, mid-engine packaging, four-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering together in a physical 1987 technology study. Nissan's Heritage Collection gives the concept its own detailed specification and connects its research to later production cars. That makes it a substantial archive subject without calling it an unreleased limited edition. Its 330 PS reference belongs to this development stage, and should not be used indiscriminately for the earlier MID4.

The second MID4 stage

Nissan describes MID4 as an experimental programme used to display research achievements at motor shows. The MID4-II appeared at the twenty-seventh Tokyo Motor Show in 1987. Its name retained the mid-engine and four-wheel-drive idea, but the later car carried a different package of hardware and a more developed body. Separating the two stages makes the programme's progression visible rather than flattening several years of work into one fictional specification.

Nissan Heritage: MID4-II specification and technology history

The twin-turbo V6

The collection lists the VG30DETT, a 2,960 cc DOHC V6 with twin turbochargers and intercooling, producing 330 PS at 6,800 rpm and 382 Nm at 3,200 rpm. Those are the historical concept figures. They are not the output of every later production Nissan using a related engine designation. The value of the prototype record is that it shows a particular research configuration at a particular date, before production-market requirements reshaped the broader technology story.

A chassis designed around integration

Nissan lists double-wishbone front suspension and a multilink rear arrangement with HICAS steering. Its table gives a 2,540 mm wheelbase, two seats and a 1,400 kg curb-weight reference. A mid-engine layout, driven front axle and rear steering make packaging and control part of the same problem. That observation is engineering interpretation; it does not imply an independently measured handling advantage over an unspecified rival.

Influence without mechanical identity

The manufacturer connects MID4-II research with technologies later used in the Z32 300ZX and R32 Skyline GT-R. That is an important statement of influence. It does not mean either production car is a MID4-II underneath: their layouts, body purposes and market specifications differ. The concept is most interesting as a place where ideas were tested together, rather than as a missing production model that can be reconstructed by combining later parts lists.

How to describe the surviving concept

A museum display and a period technical description establish different things. The former records the car's appearance at the time of the photograph; the latter documents the programme's announced specification. Neither should be used alone to claim present mechanical condition or untouched originality. For a fuller archive file, retain exhibition dates, later demonstrations and any restoration information alongside the original 1987 reference. This keeps the physical object and its engineering history connected without inventing a chassis census.

Rarity and production scope

Documented physical experimental concept, never sold as a customer model according to Nissan. No exact prototype-build total is assigned. It is distinct from the 1985 MID4; later Z32/R32 technology links do not create extra MID4 production.

This is an Archive record. Concepts, restored heritage vehicles, works cars and competition programmes are not added to customer road-production totals. A programme profile does not establish how many physical chassis were made, and repeated exhibition appearances do not create additional vehicles.

Frequently asked questions

Did the MID4-II enter production?

Nissan says this model was never sold in the market.

Was it simply a mid-engine 300ZX?

No. Nissan identifies shared research influence, not an identical production vehicle.

What is the production-count boundary for this profile?

Documented physical experimental concept, never sold as a customer model according to Nissan. No exact prototype-build total is assigned. It is distinct from the 1985 MID4; later Z32/R32 technology links do not create extra MID4 production.
