BMW R 57

The BMW R 57 continued the sporting 500cc line after the R 47. BMW's own account describes an evolutionary model, with a larger carburettor and front brake among its changes. Its scarcity is historical production scarcity, without an anniversary badge or an announced numbered allocation.

Why this machine matters

The R 57 rewards close comparison rather than a dramatic reinvention narrative. Its role in a collection is to show how a specialist sporting model developed through detail changes. The reported individual tally is checked against BMW's combined R 57/R 63 production entry, with the two models kept separate.

The story

The manufacturer's catalogue retains the 494cc flat-twin format and an 18hp rating. This continuity matters when interpreting the new designation: a higher model number did not automatically mean an entirely new engine concept. The selected side photograph of a 1929 R 57 makes the engine, frame and final-drive arrangement visible together. It is an exact-model reference, not evidence that every item on a different survivor matches factory delivery.

Built in limited numbers

1,006 is the reported individual-model tally. BMW’s historical booklet groups R 57 + R 63 at 1,800; the individual figures reconcile to that grouped total. The grouped figure is not assigned separately to every model. No present-day survivor count or independently audited completion census is claimed.

Authenticity & identification

Identification should separate an R 57 from an R 47 assembled with later parts. Compare the documented chassis identity with engine, induction and front-brake details. Keep records of repaired or replaced components instead of relying on an early-style saddle or paint scheme. Any racing association needs a separate documentary connection to the motorcycle concerned.
