The first LEAF NISMO RC shared technology and a visual relationship with Nissan's road EV, but its carbon racing structure and rear-drive layout made it a very different machine. Nissan unveiled the physical prototype at the 2011 New York International Auto Show. This Archive profile follows that original 80 kW development vehicle, keeping the more powerful second-generation RC introduced in 2018 outside its specification and count scope.

A laboratory with a racing body

Nissan presented the NISMO RC as a rolling development laboratory for electric propulsion and aerodynamics, with possible future competition applications. That wording is more precise than assuming it immediately entered a customer racing series. The physical car was built for demonstrations and testing. Its competition appearance establishes the design's purpose, while any claim about an individual chassis's race results would require separate event and vehicle records.

A structure distinct from the road LEAF

A carbon-fibre monocoque and removable body sections replaced the ordinary hatchback architecture. The car had two doors, no rear passenger accommodation and a very low silhouette. These changes are central to understanding why it cannot be described as a stripped road LEAF alone. Shared styling and electrical components do not mean that a normal production car possesses the RC's structure or could become one through a simple trim deletion.

A rear-drive electric layout

The original RC placed its motor, inverter and battery centrally and drove the rear wheels, unlike the front-drive road model. Nissan specified an 80 kW motor and forty-eight battery modules. Double-wishbone suspension and racing tyres supported the intended use. These figures belong to the 2011 architecture and should not be replaced by the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive specification of the later RC simply because the programme name was reused.

Testing figures with a date attached

The release reported preliminary acceleration to 62 mph in 6.85 seconds, a 93 mph maximum and an estimated twenty minutes of running under racing conditions. The projected running time is not an everyday road range. The stated 2,068-pound weight also belongs to the early reference vehicle. Presenting these together with their testing context is more informative than mixing early and late RC performance into one supposedly universal specification.

Separating programmes and chassis

Use the original body shape, dated Nissan material and manufacturer identification when cataloguing a first-generation RC. Later demonstration photographs can illustrate the programme without proving which individual chassis is shown. Multiple appearances do not establish additional builds, while the later generation deserves its own record. The selected release verifies a physical competition prototype but does not supply a complete, reconciled chassis-by-chassis production list.

Rarity and production scope

Verified physical first-generation LEAF NISMO RC programme. No count of road LEAFs is applied and no complete racing-chassis census is inferred. The second-generation RC is a different technical identity.

This is an Archive record. Concepts, restored heritage vehicles, works cars and competition programmes are not added to customer road-production totals. A programme profile does not establish how many physical chassis were made, and repeated exhibition appearances do not create additional vehicles.

Frequently asked questions

Was the 2011 RC front-wheel drive?

No. Nissan specifies a centrally located electrical package driving the rear wheels.

Is twenty minutes a road range?

It is the manufacturer’s estimated running duration under racing conditions, not a road-distance rating.

What is the production-count boundary for this profile?

Verified physical first-generation LEAF NISMO RC programme. No count of road LEAFs is applied and no complete racing-chassis census is inferred. The second-generation RC is a different technical identity.
