The Lotus Type 93T marks the team’s first Renault-powered turbocharged JPS Formula One programme. Its short original campaign is kept separate from the rapid Type 94T replacement later in the same year.

History and verified programme identity

Classic Team Lotus identifies the Type 93T as the first turbo-engined JPS Formula One car, powered by Renault. Its custodial account places the first race at Long Beach in 1983 and the programme through the Canadian Grand Prix in the middle of that season. Three entries appear in the public register. Those are programme chassis references rather than a road-car build allocation or a current survivor tally. The supplied image is explicitly identified as a Type 93T on display at Snetterton in June 2010, preserving a later physical appearance independently of the original race period.

Engineering and design

The turbocharged Renault partnership establishes a different powertrain programme from the Cosworth-powered Type 92. That difference matters even where contemporary bodies share black-and-gold presentation. A new engine relationship changes the technical questions a researcher should ask about installation, cooling and dated race specification, but exact dimensions and outputs must come from the relevant record. The exterior display photograph cannot supply them by inference. It does show a complete low single-seater with a narrow nose, side body and rear wing. Those visible forms illustrate the Type without pretending to inspect the turbo system beneath its covers.

The physical car in the supplied photograph

Stu.G’s photograph shows a black-and-gold Type 93T on display at Snetterton in June 2010. The low nose, cockpit, exposed tyres and rear wing are visible beside another historic car. The source’s Elio de Angelis association remains part of the file context, while its modern display date is retained explicitly.

A closer look at the design

The Snetterton display shows a physical Type 93T in a setting where the car’s outer form can be studied closely. Its familiar sponsor finish is helpful visual context, but the programme’s defining distinction is the Renault turbo partnership and the short original campaign. The primary record supplies those dates and category facts. A researcher should then use an individual chassis history to connect a particular engine, body or driver association with the appropriate event. This avoids letting the later Type 94T’s story absorb its predecessor simply because both appeared in 1983. The separate profile gives the first turbo programme its own place in the Lotus sequence, with a real image and an explicit boundary around what that image can establish.

Collecting and chassis evidence

For a Type 93T, connect the chassis identity with its original Renault-powered period before following later restoration. The primary record’s short campaign makes dated race entries particularly useful for distinguishing it from the Type 94T. Current body panels, engine installation and display livery require their own evidence. The three register entries are not a count of every exhibit or every engine fitted during the programme. A later display photo is useful for a model profile while an individual collector file should carry the documentary chain needed for a specific driver or event association.

Related Lotus designs and meaningful comparisons

The Type 94T is the immediate same-year comparison, while the Type 92 shows the other 1983 suspension and engine-development branch. The separate records make the season’s changes readable. A common year and sponsor identity do not make these cars one interchangeable programme.

Reading the sources

The programme sources and the photograph answer different questions. Manufacturer and custodial records establish the original model, Type, category and published production scope. The creator’s file establishes the pictured subject, setting and image permission. An individual chassis history can then add ownership, competition entries and dated repairs without changing the scope of the original programme. Build references are not survivor counts, and a later specification does not automatically become an additional newly manufactured vehicle. Where primary evidence does not establish a complete fabrication census, that field remains unassigned.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Type 93T just another name for the Type 94T?

No. The custodian describes its own Renault-turbo campaign from Long Beach to the Canadian Grand Prix in 1983. The Type 94T is a separate later design with its own register.

How is Type 93T Renault Turbo Formula One classified?

This is a Team Lotus competition Type archive. It remains separate from Lotus road-car production. Customer cars, works entries and converted chassis need a reconciled scope before any complete fabrication tally is assigned.

Which technical details are established for the programme?

The primary record supports programme year: 1983; powertrain partnership: Renault turbo; custodial first-race reference: Long Beach, 1983. These are programme or explicitly attributed photo references. A particular surviving car’s engine, chassis repairs and competition preparation require its own dated documentation.

Does the photographed appearance establish factory originality?

The caption records a real creator-identified Type 93T Renault Turbo Formula One subject and its later setting. It establishes the illustration’s scope, while original components, restoration work and individual race provenance require chassis-specific evidence. A competition number, current paint or museum display is not used as an originality certificate.

What rarity or archive scope is verified?

Published reference: 3 listed register entries. The named programme scope is retained independently of audited completed output and current survivor counts.
