The BMW M4 Design Study by Kith is the Cinnabar Red one-off that helped introduce BMW M’s partnership with Ronnie Fieg in October 2020. It paired a new G82 M4 Competition with Fieg’s rebuilt 1989 E30 M3, using colour and personalised details to make the connection between generations immediately visible.

Origins and history

The two cars answer a design question: how can a memory associated with an older BMW survive in a very different modern body? The study’s answer is selective continuity. It transfers paint, branding and leather treatment while retaining the proportions of the new M4. It does not attempt to conceal the years of engineering and design separating the two cars.

Design and engineering

Cinnabar Red is central to the pairing. BMW describes its special selection for the study as a link to the E30 era. Kith motorsport branding, monogrammed leather and illuminated headrest details carry the idea inside. The exterior therefore works with the cabin rather than functioning as a single paint-based gesture.

The car’s base-model identity is M4 Competition Coupé. A current magazine page can carry present-day fuel-consumption information for a related production model; such regulatory footers should not be mistaken for a complete build sheet for the 2020 original. This profile keeps unconfirmed study-specific engine ratings out of the specification table.

Why this BMW matters

The one-off matters as the first physical expression of a partnership that subsequently produced a 150-car customer M4 edition. It occupies a different place in the story from those customer cars: a personal design bridge, rather than a numbered retail series. Its red finish is evidence of that role.

Design studies can be collected and documented through their public appearances, collaborators and original configuration. A later exhibition of this red car is another event in the original’s history, not another example. The rebuilt E30 companion also has its own identity; a pair displayed together does not turn the M4 count into two.

Identity and original specification

Authentication should begin with BMW and Kith project records and the history of the original vehicle. Match the complete Cinnabar Red exterior, emblem treatment and cabin to period factory images. Similar paint and aftermarket branding on a regular G82 would establish resemblance, not the original commission.

Keep the 2020 debut attached to the design study even if a photograph or retrospective article is newer. Later customer-edition specifications belong to their own series record. For a one-off, custody, exhibition dates and documented restoration work can be more revealing than the generic option list of the donor model.

Frequently asked questions

How rare is the M4 Design Study by Kith?

BMW presents it as a one-of-one M4 study. The separate E30 companion is another car, not a second example of this M4.

What makes this version different?

Cinnabar Red and bespoke Kith details connect the modern M4 to Ronnie Fieg’s rebuilt E30 M3, including monogrammed leather and illuminated branding.

Which year belongs in the vehicle record?

Use 2020 for the original study’s unveiling. Later magazine updates and appearances do not change its creation chronology.

Is it the same as other similarly named BMWs?

It is separate from the 150-car M4 Competition x Kith customer edition. That series used a different matte paint palette.

How should an example be authenticated?

Establish project provenance and continuity of the original vehicle, supported by period photos of the complete exterior and interior.

What do the photographs show?

The photographs show the actual red M4 study. Production-edition matte M4s and the companion E30 are not substituted.
