BMW M4 Competition x Kith

The BMW M4 Competition x Kith brought Ronnie Fieg’s New York lifestyle brand into a 150-car worldwide collaboration. Revealed in October 2020, the G82 edition translated a personal enthusiasm for classic BMWs into a factory customer offering. BMW USA subsequently identifies the customer car as a 2022 model, so announcement and model year belong together in its chronology.

Origins and history

The project connected old and new through design rather than a mechanical recreation. Fieg’s restored E30 M3 and the Cinnabar Red M4 Design Study supplied the personal background. The production edition then developed its own appearance. That progression gives the car a stronger story than a badge applied after manufacture: the collaboration was planned across the car, its interior and a wider apparel collection.

Design and engineering

The most recognisable alteration is the fusion emblem, extending BMW’s roundel with a collaboration ring. Kith lettering and M colours appear elsewhere, while the customer paint palette consists of three matte finishes. The red design study belongs to a separate one-off project; it is not a fourth production-edition colour.

Inside, embossed leather carries the brand through the seats and other contact surfaces. The M4 Competition’s turbocharged six-cylinder and M xDrive provide the underlying performance architecture. The edition’s significance does not depend on an invented extra horsepower rating. Its distinguishing work lies in the integration of the visual language with an established M model.

Why this BMW matters

This car illustrates how modern vehicle collecting can include fashion authorship alongside engineering. A collaboration acquires meaning when its choices form a coherent whole: exterior finish, emblems, leather texture and production documentation all point to the same commission. An isolated Kith badge cannot carry that entire story.

The 150-car limit covers the worldwide offering, not 150 examples of each paint. Splitting the three colours into independent totals would inflate the edition. Equally, the one-off red M4 and the customer series should remain connected in the historical account without becoming the same identity. They are different stages of a documented partnership, each with its own construction and purpose.

Identity and original specification

Original build and sales records should identify the factory collaboration, supported by matching finish and trim. Examine the complete combination rather than treating one easily changed component as decisive. Restoration photographs and invoices help establish whether co-branded parts, leather and exterior details remain original to a particular example.

A useful vehicle record preserves announcement date, customer model year and worldwide scope separately. Accessories from the accompanying fashion collection can enrich a collection, but do not prove a car’s membership in the series. The credited photographs should show the edition itself; the Cinnabar Red study has its own profile and image set.

Frequently asked questions

How rare is the M4 Competition x Kith?

The factory collaboration was limited to 150 worldwide, with all three offered matte finishes sharing that figure. It is a series limit rather than a colour-specific count.

What makes this version different?

The fusion roundel, Kith emblems and embossed leather form a coordinated factory design. The underlying performance model is the M4 Competition with M xDrive.

Which year belongs in the vehicle record?

The collaboration was announced in 2020; BMW USA identifies the customer offering as a 2022 M4. Both dates are retained with their roles.

Is it the same as other similarly named BMWs?

The red M4 Design Study by Kith is a separate one-off. The 150 customer cars use the three announced matte finishes.

How should an example be authenticated?

Use original factory build and sale documentation, then match the full exterior and cabin treatment. Separately sold accessories do not establish edition membership.

What do the photographs show?

The selected factory images show the customer-edition presentation. The separately photographed red study is not used as a substitute.
