BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage
Explore BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage: rarity, history, specifications, FAQs and credited photos.

The BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage reinterpreted the celebrated lightweight coupé for Villa d’Este in 2015. Its Golf Yellow body and dramatic aerodynamic shapes made the heritage connection visible, while carbon-fibre construction language placed the study firmly in its own period.

Origins and history
This profile records the original design study, not a road-going customer edition. The earlier E9 3.0 CSL already has its own record. The Hommage carries forward a design idea rather than inheriting the historic production count, competition results or homologation status of the seventies car.
Design and engineering
The study makes lightweight thinking visible through exposed carbon fibre, a pared cabin and strongly defined aerodynamic surfaces. BMW’s design account describes an inline-six with eBoost, but it does not provide a complete road-car performance specification for this record. An engine output taken from another contemporary BMW would not be a verified figure for the study.
The body deliberately balances familiar references with new proportions. The roof treatment, pillar emblems and large rear wing recall the original CSL vocabulary. Cameras and modern lighting make the interpretation contemporary. In design terms, recognition comes from relationships between elements rather than from copying every panel.
Why this BMW matters
The Hommage is valuable as a record of how BMW designers interpreted their own archive. Its rarity is the original study identity, not the scarcity of a purchasable option package. A visitor sees heritage transformed into new materials and proportions, which is a different proposition from restoring an E9 or building a replica.
The later Hommage R presentation is relevant to that story, but a differently presented study should not automatically become another physical original in a vehicle inventory. This batch therefore holds BMW-088 until that identity question is resolved. The hold is not a claim that the R never existed; it protects the catalogue from counting an unestablished second original.
Identity and original specification
Authenticate the study by its project provenance and presentation history. Golf Yellow factory photographs establish the May 2015 form. Document any later changes as part of the same project history unless separate original construction is proved.
Do not attach a regular customer VIN specification, road-homologation claim or production-series badge to this design study without supporting evidence. The record’s purpose is to explain what BMW presented and why it mattered. Keeping unconfirmed performance figures out of the specification table preserves that focus.
Frequently asked questions
How rare is the 3.0 CSL Hommage?
This record covers the original Golf Yellow study. There was no customer production run identified in the factory release.
What makes this version different?
It translates the E9 CSL’s lightweight and aerodynamic themes into carbon-fibre design language.
Which year belongs in the vehicle record?
2015, the Villa d’Este presentation year. The seventies E9 is a separate historic model.
Is it the same as other similarly named BMWs?
The E9 and later 50-car 2022 CSL are distinct. Hommage R is held from separate import pending original-identity reconciliation.
How should an example be authenticated?
Use the factory project and exhibition history. A replica or another BMW with yellow paint does not establish this study’s identity.
What do the photographs show?
The photographs show the Golf Yellow Hommage presentation, keeping the original form separate from the R livery.
