2016 NIO EP9 Record and Development Programme
Explore EP9 Record and Development Programme: factory identity, history, specifications, rarity evidence, identification notes and credited photos.

The EP9 introduced NIO through a physical electric performance-car programme with a sequence of manufacturer-documented track demonstrations. Its record attempts, autonomous running and public launch belong together until individual chassis histories can separate them. This profile follows the EP9’s 2016–2017 programme without turning each circuit appearance into another supposedly unique car.
From NextEV to NIO at the Saatchi Gallery
NextEV presented the NIO brand and EP9 at London’s Saatchi Gallery on 21 November 2016. The original announcement connected a new brand identity with a completed performance vehicle and results already obtained on track. That sequence gives the EP9 a clear historical role: it was both a public introduction and a technical statement. The launch vehicle, record car and later exhibition examples should nevertheless be distinguished whenever reliable individual identification becomes available.

Four motors and a performance-focused architecture
The launch release describes four inboard electric motors, four individual gearboxes and a combined one-megawatt output reference, expressed as 1,360 PS. It also describes a carbon cockpit and chassis, interchangeable batteries and substantial aerodynamic loading. Read those elements as a coordinated brief. Electric propulsion changes how torque can be distributed, while the chassis and body still have to manage cornering loads, braking and the repeated demands of track work. The announced output is a period programme specification, not a label to apply indiscriminately to every later NIO.

The first European circuit demonstrations
NIO’s launch statement records a 7:05.12 Nürburgring Nordschleife lap on 12 October 2016 and a 1:52.78 Circuit Paul Ricard lap on 4 November. These are dated manufacturer-reported results. A useful record retains the circuit, course reference and date alongside the time. It does not strip away those conditions and present a historical result as a current, universally comparable record. This profile also leaves individual chassis allocation unresolved rather than assuming that two venues prove two separate builds.

A faster Nordschleife lap in 2017
NIO’s 12 May 2017 announcement gives a new Nordschleife time of 6:45.900 and explicitly compares it with the preceding 2016 performance. That provides a documented progression within the EP9 programme. An updated result can reflect preparation, conditions and development; it is not automatically a new edition. The cited announcement does not provide the complete chassis-and-configuration register needed to divide the programme into separate authenticated vehicle biographies.

Driven and autonomous running at COTA
At Circuit of the Americas on 23 February 2017, NIO reported an autonomous lap of 2:40.33 and a driver-controlled lap of 2:11.30. The two modes must remain labelled. A demonstration of automated running on a prepared circuit is a particular technical exercise, not a general claim that the same software was available for unrestricted customer-road use. The release supports the event and its announced times; it does not establish two independently identified cars simply because two different operating modes were used.

Shanghai and the chronology correction
The Shanghai International Circuit announcement is dated 16 March 2017 and reports a 2:01 lap by Oliver Turvey. The inventory’s 2016 Shanghai reference is corrected in this programme chronology. This is precisely why a dated primary announcement is more useful than a broad list of achievements without dates. The driver, venue and result belong to that event. They should not be transferred to a museum or show photograph whose particular chassis has not been linked to the run.

Announced supply is a different question from completed builds
The May 2017 release also describes plans for a further made-to-order batch of ten EP9s. This article records that as an announcement, not as proof that ten additional cars were completed. The workbook’s reported original investor series remains a separate unresolved quantity question. Neither figure is converted into a completed total. A chassis registry would be needed before investment cars, development vehicles, exhibits and record entries could be reconciled without overlap.

One connected record, with room for better provenance
Inventory references NIO-004, 006, 007, 008, 010, 011 and 012 are consolidated under this single programme profile. That does not assert that one physical chassis performed every role. It prevents the opposite unsupported claim: counting seven distinct cars from seven event descriptions. The bundled later EP9 photograph is labelled as a model reference. Future chassis documents can enrich the record, but they should first reconcile the existing aliases and event history so a second import does not recreate the same programme under another title.

Rarity and production scope
One consolidated EP9 record/development programme. Seven event rows do not prove seven distinct chassis, and consolidation does not claim one chassis performed every event. No audited completed EP9 total assigned.
This record belongs to the archive. Concepts, manufacturing structures and competition programmes are excluded from customer road-production totals. A documented individual is a member of a wider production total and is not added as extra production.
Identifying the documented subject
Match the complete model name, date and programme to the linked evidence. Keep any chassis-specific provenance separate from a general description of the model. A period image confirms what was photographed, while a production or technical claim requires the corresponding document.
What the photograph represents

Frequently asked questions
What is the rarity scope of this archive record?
One consolidated EP9 record/development programme. Seven event rows do not prove seven distinct chassis, and consolidation does not claim one chassis performed every event. No audited completed EP9 total assigned.
Does the title date match every photograph?
2016 is the documentary reference used for the profile. A later exhibition or museum photograph can show the same programme. Its caption identifies the photographic scope without creating another edition.
