The Lotus 3-Eleven Road turns a minimal open-body performance car into a named road specification. Its rarity references belong to a shared Road and Race programme.

History and verified programme identity

The 3-Eleven made its public debut at Goodwood in 2015, with manufacture commencing in 2016. Two versions were discussed together: Road and Race. Their combined announcement used a 311-car limit, reflecting the name, while Lotus’s later heritage table gives 113 for the original family. A smaller retrospective volume and a larger announced ceiling answer different questions. Neither provides a Road-only tally. The profile preserves both with their stated scopes, rather than assigning 311 to each branch or adding the two references together. The 2015 title reflects the programme’s introduction, while the pictured example is creator-labelled 2016.

Engineering and design

The open cockpit and reduced bodywork give the 3-Eleven a different relationship to the V6 platform than the enclosed Exige. A supercharged V6 supplies its engine context, and Lotus identifies an aluminium chassis and carbon-composite body approach. In the Road branch, the six-speed transmission reference differs from the specialised competition specification associated with Race. The visible rollover structure and small screen explain the car’s minimal presentation, but do not certify every fitted drivetrain component. Treat the original build identity as authoritative when an owner changes seats, harnesses or aerodynamic parts. Registration also depends on the individual car and jurisdiction. Model-specific factory parts documentation is useful when an original component has been superseded. Record the replacement and its date rather than assuming every current part was fitted when the programme began. This keeps an archive comparison tied to original identity while allowing a surviving or exhibited car to have its own maintenance and configuration history.

Identifying the original configuration

A 3-Eleven record needs the original Road or Race designation. A registration plate and dated source identification provide useful illustration context, but an individual specification sheet is still the best evidence for original transmission and equipment. Keep any conversion from one configuration to another within the same chassis history. The later 430 programme is a further named development and should not inherit the original Road/Race totals without a scope note. This separation also prevents the inventory’s two original branches from generating overlapping aggregate profiles. The Road article can explain the family while the unresolved Race row stays outside this upload.

Collecting and chassis evidence

A useful 3-Eleven Road history starts with the original model identity and dated factory specification. Record the chassis number, delivery market, original engine and transmission, and any numbered edition plate separately. Preserve changes in a chronological record: replaced panels, altered suspension, remapped engines and revised aerodynamic parts can affect the present configuration without creating a second original factory vehicle. Early invoices and photographs help distinguish an original edition from a later cosmetic recreation. A specialist inspection should connect those records to the car, especially its structure, mounting points and model-specific parts. A low programme volume makes careful documentation more useful; it does not establish the condition or completeness of an individual example.

The 360 Cup shows a more enclosed V6 Lotus approach. Type 66 provides another open-body track comparison, with a very different historic design origin and a separate ten-car announcement.

Reading the sources

The programme sources and the photograph answer different questions. Manufacturer and custodial records establish the original model, Type, category and published production scope. The creator’s file establishes the pictured subject, setting and image permission. An individual chassis history can then add ownership, competition entries and dated repairs without changing the scope of the original programme. Build references are not survivor counts, and a later specification does not automatically become an additional newly manufactured vehicle. Where primary evidence does not establish a complete fabrication census, that field remains unassigned.

Frequently asked questions

Were 311 Road cars and another 311 Race cars announced?

No. The original 311 reference covered the combined programme. Lotus’s later 113 family reference does not publish a Road/Race split.

How is 3-Eleven Road classified?

This is a named original Lotus road-car programme. Its qualified source references fall below the 7,500 screening threshold. Completed production, announced allocations and survivor counts remain distinct, with any unresolved differences explained in the article.

Which technical details are established for the programme?

The primary record supports introduction: Goodwood Festival of Speed, 2015; production start: 2016; manufacturer type: 123. These are programme or explicitly attributed photo references. A particular surviving car’s engine, chassis repairs and competition preparation require its own dated documentation.

Does the photographed appearance establish factory originality?

The caption records a real creator-identified 3-Eleven Road subject and its documented setting. It establishes the illustration’s scope, while original components, restoration work and individual race provenance require chassis-specific evidence. A competition number, current paint or museum display is not used as an originality certificate.

What rarity or archive scope is verified?

Original Road and Race versions shared an announced 311-car programme. Current Lotus heritage table reports 113 for the original 2016–2018 family, without a Road/Race split. Neither reference is assigned as Road-only output. LOT-156 remains separately held for Race configuration/photo evidence.
