The 1969 Skyline 2000GT-R introduced the badge in a four-door sedan, before the more familiar two-door Hakosuka. Its PGC10 code matters: it identifies the original body configuration and separates it from the later KPGC10 hardtop. A high-revving S20 straight-six provided the technical connection to Nissan's prototype-racing expertise. The car's collector significance is well established by Nissan's archive; the spreadsheet's misleading shared 832-car total is not repeated as a verified count.

The first production GT-R

Nissan dates the Skyline 2000GT-R's launch to February 1969 and connects its development to the engineering knowledge behind the R380. The sedan body gave little indication of the complexity beneath it. That contrast is the heart of the original GT-R: advanced engine design was placed in a passenger-car form suitable for touring-car competition. It should be understood in its own period rather than judged by the turbocharged, all-wheel-drive formula that arrived two decades later.

The S20 specification

The Heritage Collection lists a 1,989 cc S20 inline six with four valves per cylinder and double overhead camshafts, rated at 160 PS at 7,000 rpm. The sedan's listed curb weight is 1,120 kg and wheelbase 2,640 mm. These figures are sufficient to describe its character without importing tuned-race output. An S20 engine in a modern restoration is important evidence, but the car's original body and chassis identification still determine whether it began life as a GT-R.

A racing story shared across body styles

Nissan records a debut victory at the May 1969 JAF Grand Prix, three months after launch. The programme continued through the change to the hardtop body and ultimately reached 52 victories before the works team withdrew in October 1972. That achievement belongs to the early GT-R competition story. It should not be described as 52 wins by a single sedan, nor repeated separately for each body style as if the total were additive.

The importance of the four-door body

The sedan is more than an early hardtop with extra doors. The different model code, longer wheelbase and original launch role create a distinct factory identity. For a collector, keeping PGC10 and KPGC10 separate improves both search results and authentication. It also makes the later Autech four-door GT-R easier to understand: that car revived a sedan interpretation of the badge rather than inventing one with no historical precedent.

Building an identification file

Start with chassis stamping and period registration, then compare engine identification, body configuration and surviving factory documentation. Exterior GT-R trim can be reproduced, and many C10 Skylines have been modified over their lives. A finished car can look convincing while its underlying identity remains different. Document replacement panels and engine work separately from the original model identity; neither a restoration nor a sympathetic modification should be allowed to obscure what the car was when built.

Rarity and production scope

Nissan Australia reports 1,945 PGC10 sedan and KPGC10 hardtop GT-Rs combined. No separate completed total is assigned to this body style. The inventory’s shared 832 figure is rejected. The 1,945 parent total must not be added once for each profile, and it is not a survivor count.

Frequently asked questions

Was the first GT-R a coupe?

No. The February 1969 PGC10 was a four-door sedan; the hardtop followed in 1970.

Does this profile verify 832 cars?

No. Nissan Australia reports 1,945 first-generation sedans and hardtops combined; it does not provide a separate body-style count here.

What is the production-count boundary for this profile?

Nissan Australia reports 1,945 PGC10 sedan and KPGC10 hardtop GT-Rs combined. No separate completed total is assigned to this body style. The inventory’s shared 832 figure is rejected. The 1,945 parent total must not be added once for each profile, and it is not a survivor count.
