Mazda Furai translated the Nagare design language into a physical concept with racing underpinnings. Revealed in Detroit in 2008, it paired flowing bodywork with a Courage C65 chassis and a three-rotor powerplant. Its later destruction is part of the historical record, so the supplied period photograph is clearly identified as an earlier appearance.

History and verified programme identity

Mazda’s December 2007 announcement schedules Furai’s world premiere for the 2008 Detroit show and identifies the donor Courage C65 chassis from its American Le Mans Series programme. This makes Furai a documented physical project rather than a rendering of a hypothetical supercar. The later first-party Top Gear account describes a drive and photoshoot at Bentwaters Park in August 2008, during which the car caught fire. That account establishes why a present profile must not imply that the original intact Furai remains available for a current demonstration.

Engineering and design

The manufacturer describes a 450-hp three-rotor rotary engine and E100 ethanol fuel. These are attributed concept-programme specifications, not a claim that the car was approved for ordinary road use. The photographed body combines a racing stance with complex flowing surfaces. As design analysis, the open visual spaces around the wheels and the pronounced front treatment help the body communicate its track ancestry. The styling relationship with Nagare and Taiki is meaningful, but their technical proposals do not become Furai hardware by association. The published specification describes the programme or the explicitly named configuration. An individual car can receive revised parts during use or restoration. Keep those changes dated when comparing it with other Mazdas, so current hardware does not silently rewrite the original engineering record. Weight and output figures also require their printed measurement convention and market context rather than being treated as measurements of the pictured vehicle.

The physical car in the supplied photograph

Luke wilson photographed Furai at the 2008 British Motor Show. The real image shows the complete grey concept on its exhibition platform and predates the August fire described by Top Gear. Its 55 markings are a tribute context, not proof that it is the 1991 Le Mans-winning 787B chassis. The photo remains separately credited under CC BY2.0.

How to identify and compare the programme

Furai’s archive should distinguish its donor racing history, concept reconstruction, exhibition appearances and destruction. Those stages do not represent independent customer-production series. The number 55 connects its presentation with Mazda racing heritage, while the chassis source identifies a different physical foundation from 787B-002. Preserve the photographer’s event date with the image so a reader understands the intact car’s historical appearance. The later first-party incident account should remain linked rather than silently replaced by a claim of a surviving original.

Collecting and chassis evidence

An individual Furai record starts with its original chassis identity, delivery specification and dated documents. Preserve the engine and body references separately where the car was coachbuilt or changed during competition. Original correspondence, build sheets and early photographs can establish details that a modern exterior cannot show. Record replacement panels, engine changes and restoration work chronologically. A present appearance may differ from the original specification without representing a second manufactured vehicle. For a numbered edition, retain its plate and allocation paperwork alongside the chassis file. Historical names and race numbers are useful search references, but they are not substitutes for permanent identity or a reconciled production register.

Related Mazda designs and meaningful comparisons

The Furai belongs to Nagare Design Concepts. Compare it with the two linked profiles to follow how Mazda changed its engineering or its presentation. Their original model identities remain separate, even when a coachbuilder, engine family or anniversary theme connects them. Shared ancestry does not merge their manufactured quantities or make their photographs interchangeable.

Reading the sources

The programme sources and the photograph answer different questions. Manufacturer and custodial records establish the original model, Type, category and published production scope. The creator’s file establishes the pictured subject, setting and image permission. An individual chassis history can then add ownership, competition entries and dated repairs without changing the scope of the original programme. Build references are not survivor counts, and a later specification does not automatically become an additional newly manufactured vehicle. Where primary evidence does not establish a complete fabrication census, that field remains unassigned.

Frequently asked questions

What does the published rarity reference cover?

Manufacturer-confirmed physical Furai concept built around a Courage C65 racing chassis. Retained as a historic concept archive, separate from 787B production and road homologation. Top Gear’s first-party account reports its destruction during an August 2008photoshoot. No current running survivor or complete prototype fabrication tally is assigned.

How is Furai classified?

This is a physical concept or competition archive. Its documented exhibit or chassis identity remains separate from road-car production. Proposed systems, present hardware and an original build census answer different questions.

Which technical details are established for the programme?

The primary record supports world premiere: 2008 North American International Auto Show; donor chassis: Courage C65, Mazda announcement; published powerplant: Three-rotor rotary;450 hp manufacturer convention. These are programme or explicitly attributed photo references. A particular surviving car’s engine, chassis repairs and competition preparation require its own dated documentation.

Does the photographed appearance establish factory originality?

The caption records a real creator-identified Furai subject and its documented setting. It establishes the illustration’s scope, while original components, restoration work and individual race provenance require chassis-specific evidence. A competition number, current paint or museum display is not used as an originality certificate.

What rarity or archive scope is verified?

Manufacturer-confirmed physical Furai concept built around a Courage C65 racing chassis. Retained as a historic concept archive, separate from 787B production and road homologation. Top Gear’s first-party account reports its destruction during an August 2008photoshoot. No current running survivor or complete prototype fabrication tally is assigned.
