The FQ-440 MR was an official Mitsubishi UK anniversary edition with an announced run of 40 cars. It takes the Evolution X into a distinctive national-importer specification, with substantial engine and chassis changes. The correct quoted output unit is bhp, preserving the distinction from Japanese PS ratings.

Forty cars for a UK anniversary

The original Mitsubishi UK announcement, reproduced in full by The Auto Channel in March 2014, describes a 40-car programme celebrating the company’s 40 years in the UK. That is the matched national edition scope. It is not the number of all Evolution X MRs, all FQ editions or every Evolution sold in Britain. The announcement provides an edition limit rather than an independently audited survivor census.

The 440 bhp specification

The importer’s equipment list quotes 440 bhp and 412 lb ft, with a bespoke ECU calibration and associated intake, exhaust and fuel-system changes. The transmission is Mitsubishi’s Twin Clutch SST. These are the official programme’s period specifications, not a current dyno guarantee for a surviving car. The workbook’s 440 PS wording is corrected; changing the unit would change the meaning of the number.

Chassis equipment is part of the identity

The release lists Alcon braking equipment, Eibach suspension changes and 18-inch BBS wheels. Their role should be considered alongside the engine work. As editorial interpretation, the significance is a coordinated importer specification with a defined brief. An ordinary Evolution X modified to a similar peak power figure does not acquire that original programme provenance.

Appearance and the limits of a reference photo

Frost White is the announced exterior colour. The included Evolution X family photograph is explicitly labelled as a reference and does not show an authenticated FQ-440 MR. Body shape alone cannot establish importer conversion records, ECU calibration, brake specification or original supply history. A profile photograph should never be allowed to imply those details when the photographed car has not been matched to them.

Documents for an individual example

Begin with the original UK sales and supply records, complete vehicle identity and paperwork linking the car to this programme. Then record the condition and any subsequent mechanical changes. Replacement wheels, an aftermarket map or a rebuilt transmission may be legitimate parts of its later history, but they need to be described separately from the 2014 specification. Keep the announced 40-car boundary attached to the original edition.

Identifying the documented subject

Match the complete model name, date and programme to the linked evidence. Keep any chassis-specific provenance separate from a general description of the model. A period image confirms what was photographed, while a production or technical claim requires the corresponding document.

Frequently asked questions

Is the rarity figure a worldwide production total?

Manufacturer/importer-announced UK edition limit of 40. Completed production, current survivors and the total for all Evolution X variants are not assigned.

How should an individual example be authenticated?

Match the complete original model information to the appropriate dated documentation, then record the present condition and modifications separately. A badge, colour scheme or stripped interior alone is insufficient evidence of a factory grade.
