1996 Mitsubishi FTO GP Version R (Japan)
Explore FTO GP Version R (Japan): factory identity, history, specifications, rarity evidence, identification notes and credited photos.

The FTO GP Version R is a named factory performance specification within Mitsubishi’s compact coupe family. Its history is more nuanced than a single familiar photograph or a generic description of a lightweight FTO. An original May 1996 brochure and later Aero Series material show why the exact date and specification must remain part of the record.
The earlier brochure changes the date
The inspected GP Version R factory brochure is dated May 1996, earlier than the workbook’s 1997 reference. This profile therefore uses 1996 as its documentary starting point. The brochure shows an early GP Version R with specific equipment and a four-speed INVECS-II Sport Mode automatic. It should not be retrospectively described as identical to every later manual or automatic Version R.

A programme with later specifications
The November 1997 Aero Series brochure documents GP Version R Aero Series alongside GX Sports Package Aero Series. They are not the same grade. The GP Version R material identifies the MIVEC V6 and offers five-speed manual and five-speed Sport Mode automatic configurations in that later programme. The earlier and later documents should be read chronologically rather than collapsed into one undated specification sheet.

The production reference reconciled
The Japanese EPC-derived dataset lists 664 GP Version R records and 370 GP Version R Aero Series records, for 1,034 in the family covered here. The 664 group itself includes earlier and later subtypes. The Aero Series is included in this profile and must not subsequently be added again as a second batch entry. This count does not describe the much larger GPX or total FTO production.
Equipment as part of identity
The early brochure highlights the relationship between the MIVEC engine, differential, wheels, seats and other sporting equipment. Later Aero material has its own equipment list. Identify a candidate car against the applicable dated document, then record changes. Blue seats, a large spoiler or an aftermarket strut brace are visible clues, but easily transferred parts cannot independently establish a factory Version R.

Using the photograph accurately
The supplied image identifies a later GP Version R example. Its caption does not imply that the car represents the exact May 1996 presentation. When matching photographs to a particular specification, compare the front treatment, aerodynamic parts, cabin and original model information together. The factory chronology explains differences more reliably than assuming that one photographed car defines the entire programme.
A distinct comparison with the GTO
The GTO Twin Turbo MR makes a useful comparison because both are named Japanese performance grades within larger coupe families. Their powertrains and market positions are different, so MR and Version R should not be treated as equivalent technical specifications. What connects them in this archive is the value of precise factory identity, dated documentation and a production reference that keeps grade boundaries intact.

Identifying the documented subject
Match the complete model name, date and programme to the linked evidence. Keep any chassis-specific provenance separate from a general description of the model. A period image confirms what was photographed, while a production or technical claim requires the corresponding document.
What the photograph represents
Later Japanese FTO GP Version R example with visible non-factory graphics; it does not illustrate an untouched factory presentation. Earlier and later specifications are described separately in the text.

Frequently asked questions
Is the rarity figure a worldwide production total?
1034 Japanese catalogue records in the explicitly described grade scope; independently compiled from ASA/CAPS information. Completed worldwide production is not assigned.
How should an individual example be authenticated?
Match the complete original model information to the appropriate dated documentation, then record the present condition and modifications separately. A badge, colour scheme or stripped interior alone is insufficient evidence of a factory grade.
Is the Aero Series an extra profile?
The 370 Aero Series records are already included in this GP Version R family profile. They must not be imported again as an additional vehicle programme.
