The Lotus Type 47 turns the Europa body concept into a dedicated competition car. Its early public appearance in 1966 and later production record are kept distinct from the ordinary Type 46 road-car series.

History and verified programme identity

Classic Team Lotus identifies the Type 47 as a racing-only version of the Type 46, with a 1,594 cc Ford twin-cam engine, and reports 55 built for 1967–1968. Lotus’s manufacturer Europa history dates its first Brands Hatch appearance to Boxing Day 1966. Those dates describe debut and subsequent programme period rather than conflicting cars. The road Europa’s Renault engine and series totals are not assigned to the racer. The 55-car statement remains a source-reported reference, separate from an independently audited completed tally.

Engineering and design

A racing derivative can share a recognizable body outline with a road car while changing its underlying mechanical arrangement and competition purpose. The Type 47’s twin-cam installation therefore needs its own specification record. The photograph shows the enclosed cabin and covered wheels, giving a clear contrast with the single-seaters nearby in Lotus history. Its later Gold Leaf appearance is a dated image context, not proof that every original Type 47 had that livery. Current engine, gearbox and structural originality require an individual chassis file even where the model identity is well established.

The physical car in the supplied photograph

John Chapman’s photograph shows a red-and-white Type 47 at the Sommet des Légends meeting in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, in July 2009. The source explicitly identifies a racing Type 47 in Gold Leaf Team Lotus livery. That model label is retained, rather than substituting a modified ordinary road Europa.

A closer look at the programme

The enclosed cabin makes the Type 47 look superficially closer to a road Europa than to an open sports racer. That resemblance is precisely why the Type number and explicit racing record matter. A body outline alone cannot distinguish a factory competition programme from a later independently converted road car. The photograph is useful because the creator names the Type directly, and the primary page supplies its dedicated purpose. The profile retains both, leaving an individual chassis’s present mechanical preparation to further dated documentation. The Type 47’s cabin, front wings and rear body form a continuous covered-wheel silhouette. The open door area and nearby vehicles give a sense of its small scale in the paddock. Its red-and-white presentation is explicitly identified as Gold Leaf livery by the creator. That later appearance can be discussed as shown while remaining separate from a claim about every original Type 47. The comparison with the road Europa is useful precisely because their outlines are related: the programme record and explicit racing caption establish the distinction that shape alone cannot resolve.

Collecting and chassis evidence

The build reference belongs to the Type 47 competition programme, not a road-car allocation or a count of surviving racers. A chassis history should connect delivery, race entries and later restoration before individual driver claims are added. A road Europa converted independently for racing would need a separate origin statement. The primary programme record and explicit creator caption provide the scope used here.

Related Lotus designs and meaningful comparisons

The Type 46 Europa S1 supplies the road-car comparison, while the Type 30 gives another covered-wheel racing approach. Reading the profiles together explains a shared marque and a different structure or powertrain task without making their manufacturing records interchangeable.

Reading the sources

The programme sources and the photograph answer different questions. Manufacturer and custodial records establish the original model, Type, category and published production scope. The creator’s file establishes the pictured subject, setting and image permission. An individual chassis history can then add ownership, competition entries and dated repairs without changing the scope of the original programme. Build references are not survivor counts, and a later specification does not automatically become an additional newly manufactured vehicle. Where primary evidence does not establish a complete fabrication census, that field remains unassigned.

Frequently asked questions

Why is 1966 used when the custodial period is 1967–1968?

Lotus records the first Brands Hatch appearance on Boxing Day 1966. The later custodial period describes the subsequent competition programme; both dates are retained.

How is Type 47 Europa Competition Car classified?

This is a Team Lotus competition Type archive. It remains separate from Lotus road-car production. Customer cars, works entries and converted chassis need a reconciled scope before any complete fabrication tally is assigned.

Which technical details are established for the programme?

The primary record supports first public competition reference: Brands Hatch, Boxing Day 1966; custodial production period: 1967–1968; engine reference: 1,594 cc Ford twin-cam. These are programme or explicitly attributed photo references. A particular surviving car’s engine, chassis repairs and competition preparation require its own dated documentation.

Does the photographed appearance establish factory originality?

The caption records a real creator-identified Type 47 Europa Competition Car subject and its later setting. It establishes the illustration’s scope, while original components, restoration work and individual race provenance require chassis-specific evidence. A competition number, current paint or museum display is not used as an originality certificate.

What rarity or archive scope is verified?

Published source reference: 55. Scope follows the named programme or register; independently audited completed output and survivor census remain unassigned.
