Ducati 1098 R Bayliss Limited Edition

The Ducati 1098 R Bayliss Limited Edition celebrated Troy Bayliss’s third World Superbike championship after the 2008 season. Announced as a 500-bike numbered series and commonly associated with model year 2009, it used the 1098 R as its foundation. It is a separate tribute from the earlier 998 S Bayliss Replica.

Design and engineering

Aldo Drudi’s livery drew on Bayliss’s final Portimão race appearance, including the familiar number 21. The R platform supplied the competition-focused engineering beneath the commemorative finish. The launch package included numbered identification and accompanying presentation items. Supplied Termignoni race equipment and its ECU belong to a specific configuration and should be distinguished from the motorcycle’s road setup.

Production and edition scope

Five hundred is the announced global edition limit. The championship and announcement year of 2008 should be recorded separately from 2009 model-year references. A motorcycle registered later still belongs to the same numbered series. The 998 S tribute’s 400-bike figure must not be combined with this edition or substituted for its own cap.

Identifying an authentic example

Check the top-clamp identification against chassis and original sale records. Where retained, compare the matching presentation plaque and accompanying equipment with the numbered motorcycle. Record the original bodywork and any later repaint, signature or exhaust change. Bayliss colours on a standard 1098 R do not alone establish factory limited-edition status.

Collector significance

The edition marks a particularly well-defined moment: a third title and the close of Bayliss’s full-time World Superbike career. For collectors, that story is strongest when the correct factory motorcycle and supplied package remain documented together. Its own maintenance and use history should accompany the championship narrative rather than be overshadowed by it.
