The GT Track Series takes AMG GT performance into a dedicated circuit-only programme. Limited to 55 cars for AMG’s 55th anniversary in 2022, it uses a powerful twin-turbo V8 and a purpose-built track specification. Its name should not be shortened into a generic description of any AMG GT used on a circuit.

History and verified programme identity

The manufacturer introduced Track Series in March 2022. The programme draws from the GT Black Series context while establishing a separate track-use identity. Its allocation, equipment and intended environment distinguish it from both a road Black Series and the GT3 customer-racing family. A track-only car does not automatically qualify for every championship simply because it carries racing-style hardware.

Engineering and design

The maker describes a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft and 734 PS. A sequential racing transmission, competition controls and extensive aerodynamic equipment support the circuit brief. The absence of normal road-use obligations allows different priorities in noise, cabin equipment and service requirements. Those choices are engineering characteristics, not evidence of road homologation. Reading this design as a complete system is more useful than treating its most conspicuous detail as a separate accessory. Body shape, packaging and the intended operating environment influence one another. The specification describes the original programme; equipment fitted to another derivative should not be transferred simply because its badge looks similar. Keep metric power, mechanical horsepower and market-specific published figures in their original conventions when comparing technical records.

Edition identity and design significance

The number 55 marks both the anniversary and the announced quantity, but it does not connect this car to every Edition 55 offered that year. In particular, GT3 Edition 55 was a separate five-car programme using another engine architecture. The supplied exterior photo visibly identifies Track Series in its display context and shows the large fixed aerodynamic components.

Collecting and chassis evidence

Keep the manufacturer delivery specification, running-hours records and component-life documentation together. Circuit use can accumulate stress without large road mileage. Championship eligibility must be established from the actual regulations and homologation context rather than inferred from the car’s appearance. Begin an individual vehicle file with the permanent chassis identity, dated manufacturer specification and original delivery paperwork. Retain later invoices and dated photographs beside that starting record. Paint, wheels and badges can be replaced; they describe current appearance rather than proving original allocation. A documented repair or specification change deserves its own date and explanation. An edition plaque is most useful when it agrees with the factory record. Do not turn a registration year, current plate number or event appearance into another manufactured vehicle.

Related Mercedes-Benz designs and meaningful comparisons

GT R PRO provides a limited road-car comparison with a strong chassis emphasis. GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport is another non-homologated collector track programme, but its naturally aspirated engine and 13-car limit belong to a different family.

Reading the sources

The programme sources and the photograph answer different questions. Manufacturer and custodial records establish the original model, Type, category and published production scope. The creator’s file establishes the pictured subject, setting and image permission. An individual chassis history can then add ownership, competition entries and dated repairs without changing the scope of the original programme. Build references are not survivor counts, and a later specification does not automatically become an additional newly manufactured vehicle. Where primary evidence does not establish a complete fabrication census, that field remains unassigned.

Frequently asked questions

How rare is the GT Track Series?

Mercedes-AMG announced 55 GT Track Series cars for its 55th anniversary. This is a dedicated track-car programme, not ordinary road production and not the five-car GT3 Edition 55. The announced limit is distinct from an independently audited completion or survivor tally.

How is GT Track Series classified?

This is a Mercedes-Benz competition archive. It remains separate from Mercedes-Benz road-car production. Customer cars, works entries and converted chassis need a reconciled scope before any complete fabrication tally is assigned.

Which technical details are established for the programme?

The manufacturer programme record supports engine: 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8; flat-plane crankshaft; manufacturer output reference: 734 PS; use / transmission: Dedicated track use; sequential racing gearbox. These are programme or explicitly attributed photo references. A particular surviving car’s engine, chassis repairs and competition preparation require its own dated documentation.

Does the photographed appearance establish factory originality?

The caption records a source-identified GT Track Series subject and its documented setting. It establishes the illustration’s scope, while original components, restoration work and individual race provenance require chassis-specific evidence. A competition number, current paint or museum display is not used as an originality certificate.

What rarity or archive scope is verified?

Mercedes-AMG announced 55 GT Track Series cars for its 55th anniversary. This is a dedicated track-car programme, not ordinary road production and not the five-car GT3 Edition 55. The announced limit is distinct from an independently audited completion or survivor tally.
