The G 650 Landaulet places Maybach rear-seat luxury above a portal-axle G-Class chassis. Its rear fabric opening preserves a closed front compartment, producing a genuine landaulet arrangement rather than an ordinary full convertible. Mercedes-Maybach limited the programme to 99 vehicles.

History and verified programme identity

The model was announced in February 2017. It combines several identities that must remain distinct: the G-Class body and off-road architecture, Maybach luxury treatment and a specially extended rear passenger environment. Portal axles give the vehicle its remarkable height, while the opening rear roof places the visual emphasis on the passengers behind the driver. The unusual proportions follow those functional choices.

Engineering and design

The manufacturer specifies a twin-turbo V12 and portal-axle running gear. Portal gearing raises the axle relationship to the wheel centres, supporting substantial clearance beneath the chassis. This is different from simply fitting taller springs. The separate front and rear environments also affect the cabin’s design: a partition and rear comfort equipment serve a passenger-focused role rather than the brief of a lightweight trail vehicle. Reading this design as a complete system is more useful than treating its most conspicuous detail as a separate accessory. Body shape, packaging and the intended operating environment influence one another. The specification describes the original programme; equipment fitted to another derivative should not be transferred simply because its badge looks similar. Keep metric power, mechanical horsepower and market-specific published figures in their original conventions when comparing technical records.

Edition identity and design significance

The Landaulet is not the G 63 6×6 and is not an open version of every G-Class derivative. Four wheels, elevated portal-axle stance, elongated passenger section and rear-only fabric opening define this programme. A conventional G-Class with a cut roof would not establish Maybach identity. The original manufacturer record links the physical configuration to the small complete production reference.

Collecting and chassis evidence

A useful vehicle history should retain chassis-specific records for the extended body, portal running gear, rear partition and powered roof. Luxury trim and specialist driveline maintenance are different areas of expertise and should both be visible in the service file. Begin an individual vehicle file with the permanent chassis identity, dated manufacturer specification and original delivery paperwork. Retain later invoices and dated photographs beside that starting record. Paint, wheels and badges can be replaced; they describe current appearance rather than proving original allocation. A documented repair or specification change deserves its own date and explanation. An edition plaque is most useful when it agrees with the factory record. Do not turn a registration year, current plate number or event appearance into another manufactured vehicle.

Related Mercedes-Benz designs and meaningful comparisons

The G 63 Grand Edition later uses a conventional closed G-Class body and black-and-gold presentation. Ultimate Luxury explores high seating in a concept rather than a production off-roader. Neither should inherit the Landaulet’s 99-car reference.

Reading the sources

The programme sources and the photograph answer different questions. Manufacturer and custodial records establish the original model, Type, category and published production scope. The creator’s file establishes the pictured subject, setting and image permission. An individual chassis history can then add ownership, competition entries and dated repairs without changing the scope of the original programme. Build references are not survivor counts, and a later specification does not automatically become an additional newly manufactured vehicle. Where primary evidence does not establish a complete fabrication census, that field remains unassigned.

Frequently asked questions

How rare is the G 650 Landaulet?

Mercedes-Maybach announced 99 G 650 Landaulets; the manufacturer’s later G-Class history also describes 99 made. This is the complete named Landaulet programme, separate from normal G-Class, G 500 4×4² and AMG G 65 production. No current survivor total is assigned.

How is G 650 Landaulet classified?

This is a named original Mercedes-Benz road-car programme or factory body configuration within a qualifying low-volume family. The source-defined reference is below 7,500. Completed manufacture, shared allocation ceilings and current survivor counts remain separately labelled.

Which technical details are established for the programme?

The manufacturer programme record supports engine architecture: Twin-turbocharged V12; running gear: Four-wheel drive; portal axles; roof arrangement: Closed front compartment; opening rear fabric section. These are programme or explicitly attributed photo references. A particular surviving car’s engine, chassis repairs and competition preparation require its own dated documentation.

Does the photographed appearance establish factory originality?

The caption records a source-identified G 650 Landaulet subject and its documented setting. It establishes the illustration’s scope, while original components, restoration work and individual race provenance require chassis-specific evidence. A competition number, current paint or museum display is not used as an originality certificate.

What rarity or archive scope is verified?

Mercedes-Maybach announced 99 G 650 Landaulets; the manufacturer’s later G-Class history also describes 99 made. This is the complete named Landaulet programme, separate from normal G-Class, G 500 4×4² and AMG G 65 production. No current survivor total is assigned.
