Amadeus explored a different shape for Subaru’s six-cylinder grand-touring ambitions at the 1991 Tokyo Motor Show. Contemporary factory press material records a long-roof concept with a 3,318 cc flat-six, a distinct exterior and an equally distinctive pale cabin.

The contemporary factory record establishes the identity

Subaru’s press book for the 29th Tokyo Motor Show gives Amadeus its own named section and exterior and interior images. That contemporary record is more useful than an ordinary SVX photograph labelled as a prototype. The full Amadeus name, the 1991 exhibition and the specific body should travel together in an archive. Its relationship with Subaru’s contemporary grand-touring vocabulary does not make every similar coupe another example of this concept.

A longer roof changes the grand-touring silhouette

The original exterior image shows a roof extending towards a rounded rear, with a long glazed side and a low front end. As design interpretation, this shifts the balance between passenger space, luggage accommodation and coupe-like proportions. The factory gives a length of 4,865 mm, width of 1,830 mm and height of 1,300 mm. These are concept references, not dimensions to apply to a production Subaru because its windows or front treatment look related.

The six-cylinder specification belongs to the concept

The factory specification on the illustrated page lists a 3,318 cc, four-cam, 24-valve horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine and a 250 PS reference at 6,400 rpm. Those figures should retain their original units and exhibition context. They do not establish the measured power of a surviving vehicle today or prove a later production allocation. An archive can explain the technical proposal without inventing a complete homologated performance sheet or an acceleration result.

The cabin image is part of the design evidence

Subaru’s interior view shows a light-coloured cabin with a sweeping dashboard and strongly shaped seats. It provides useful evidence of the presentation intended to accompany the exterior, rather than leaving the concept defined by a single silhouette. Material appearance in a press image cannot establish the exact condition or construction of the physical cabin now. Dated factory photographs and documentary descriptions should remain separate from later restoration claims or assumptions about surviving components.

A recovered archive figure resolves the earlier image gap

The included exterior figure is reproduced from the named Amadeus page in the factory’s 1991 press book, supplied through Subaru Image Library. It is a cropped document figure with no vehicle retouching, rather than an unrelated production car. This resolves the photo hold recorded in the earlier batch. Repeat exhibitions and copies of the same press image extend the publication history; neither establishes additional chassis or an independently verified lifetime build total.

Rarity and production scope

This Archive identity covers the named 1991 Amadeus concept documented in Subaru’s contemporary show press book. The original Verified inventory row was previously held for imagery and has not been imported before. The factory record establishes the concept and its published specification, but does not supply an audited lifetime chassis census. Its one-off shorthand is not entered as exact completed production, and ordinary SVX production remains outside this concept record.

This is an Archive identity. The experimental or individually named car is not added as extra production on top of its underlying family. Repeated exhibition appearances do not establish additional chassis; the specific scope above governs the count.

What the photograph represents
