Gilera Saturno 500 Corsa Piuma — historic series

The historic Saturno Corsa Piuma developed Gilera’s single-cylinder racing motorcycle into a lighter competition form. Museo Piaggio places its presentation in 1952, followed by availability in 1953. A Sicilian cultural-department publication reports 110 examples of the Piuma version, providing the historical series figure used here.

Design and engineering

The 500-class overhead-valve single belonged to a period racing chassis with telescopic front suspension and rear hydraulic damping. Its construction and appearance are fundamentally different from the later Gilera Supermono bearing the Saturno Piuma name. Surviving historic machines may also show competition developments, specialist fairings or later restoration choices that need individual explanation.

Production and edition scope

The 110 figure is a published historical total, not a new independent chassis audit. It concerns the historic Corsa Piuma version, rather than all Saturno road motorcycles or the 1990-era Supermono. A photographed 1955 example with Campana-style streamlining illustrates the historic series; it does not establish the launch configuration or provenance of every motorcycle.

Identifying an authentic example

Examine engine and frame identities alongside period photographs, competition records and restoration documentation. Identify whether major cases, frame components and bodywork are original, period replacements or later reproductions. The history of a particular fairing or racing number should be established separately. A model-correct appearance cannot transfer another Piuma’s event history or individual factory associations.

Collector significance

The Piuma helps explain the development of Italian single-cylinder customer racing machinery in the early post-war period. Its historical value is clearest when specification changes remain visible in the record. Separating the original racing series from its much later namesake protects both motorcycles from an inaccurate shared production story.
