The 997-generation Porsche 911 Speedster appeared in 2010 with a limit of 356 cars, explicitly recalling the first Porsche model family. It combined a 3.8-litre naturally aspirated engine with a broad-bodied open 911 format and the recognisable double-bubble rear cover. This is the factory 997 edition, separate from both earlier air-cooled Speedsters and the 1,948-car 991 production model introduced in 2019. The repeated name carries a design tradition, not one continuous production total.

A Speedster for the 997 generation

Porsche’s heritage history places the modern 997 Speedster within the long development of its pared-back open sports cars. The 2010 introduction gives this edition its own historical reference, even where individual cars carry a later registration year. It is a complete factory programme rather than a roof conversion selected from the ordinary Cabriolet range. This distinction is important in vehicle-profile titles and in photographs, since the Speedster name spans several visibly and mechanically different generations.

Porsche: Speedster generations and 997 edition

The 3.8-litre road-car package

The factory Exclusive retrospective identifies the 997 Speedster’s 3.8-litre engine and a 408 hp reference. Its PDK transmission distinguishes this programme from the later manual-only 991 Speedster. A generic Speedster specification can therefore be misleading even when the output or displacement appears close. Keep generation and transmission together in the reference table, and use the individual build record to describe any present-day equipment or mechanical changes on a particular example.

A covered rear cabin and a lower silhouette

The double-bubble cover and altered windscreen proportions are central visual features. In editorial terms, they make the rear deck and open cockpit read as one continuous design rather than an ordinary Cabriolet with the roof folded away. Those observations explain the appearance without claiming a new aerodynamic result. A photograph can show this relationship clearly, but cannot establish the originality of the body structure, conversion history or every panel on an individual car.

Why 356 belongs to this edition alone

The announced 356-car limit commemorates Porsche’s founding sports-car family. It is not a total for every Speedster generation or every car wearing similar rear bodywork. Porsche’s separate historical accounts identify other generations with different boundaries, and those remain distinct profiles. This article attributes the 997 edition reference while retaining an empty completed-production field; it does not claim that the research has independently reconciled every chassis or established a current survivor count.

Identifying a factory 997 Speedster

The collector file should start with chassis identity, original factory designation and delivery specification. Compare the roof arrangement, bodywork and interior with those records, then date later repairs or alterations. The blue show-car photograph is a programme illustration, not proof that every edition car was delivered in that colour. Factory build evidence matters more than colour, badges or a convincing conversion when determining whether a particular open 997 belongs to the limited Speedster programme.
