The 964-generation Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cup launched the Carrera Cup story in 1990. Developed from the rear-engined road-car architecture, it combined a reduced interior with dedicated competition equipment. Porsche’s museum page provides the original 265 hp reference, while its later Cup history reports 297 cars for the generation. This programme is kept separate from the road Carrera RS and from later Cup generations rather than using the all-time Cup milestone as its production total.

The first Carrera Cup season

Porsche’s account of the first Zolder qualifying session places the new series in March 1990 and follows Olaf Manthey’s opening success. The museum describes a Cup version developed in autumn 1989 from the Carrera 2. Those dates explain preparation and competition debut without implying that every car was manufactured on the day of the first race. Later Supercup history also belongs to a different championship context.

A road-related architecture prepared for racing

The museum technical description identifies a 3.6-litre flat six with dual ignition and a period 265 hp reference. Rear seats and acoustic damping were removed, and competition safety equipment was added. That establishes the original purpose as a dedicated race car rather than an ordinary Carrera with cosmetic options. For a surviving example, subsequent engine, suspension and safety updates should retain their dates and be distinguished from the first build specification.

The 297-car historical generation count

Porsche’s 2023 overview of all Cup generations reports 297 units for the 964 Carrera 2 Cup. That is a generation-specific manufacturer reference. The same article’s 5,000th-Cup-car milestone concerns the whole lineage and is not the 964’s own production total. Keeping those boundaries explicit prevents an archive summary from turning a long-running brand programme into a misleading count for this much smaller early series.

Why Cup and Carrera RS remain different profiles

Road and racing development were closely related, but the road Carrera RS and the Cup programme have different equipment, approvals and uses. A cage or competition seat installed in another 964 cannot establish original Cup manufacture. The appropriate identity is the factory build record and dated race documentation. A particular chassis may have a long competition life with changing teams and liveries that should be preserved rather than reduced to one static specification.

Identifying an original Cup car

Look for factory chassis evidence, original Cup documentation, early event records and a clear history of repairs or reshelling. Competition wear and later homologated safety equipment can be legitimate parts of the car’s life, but they need accurate description. A museum photograph may show a carefully restored period appearance without independently proving every original component. Distinguish the programme’s verified history from the authentication and current technical eligibility of an individual race car.

Rarity and production scope

Verified original 964 Carrera 2 Cup generation. Porsche’s later overview reports 297 cars for this generation; the 5,000th Cup milestone belongs to all generations combined. Competition cars are not added to the road Carrera RS count.

This is an Archive record. Concepts, restored heritage vehicles, works cars and competition programmes are not added to customer road-production totals. A programme profile does not establish how many physical chassis were made, and repeated exhibition appearances do not create additional vehicles.

Does 5,000 describe the 964 Cup production run?

No. It is a later all-generation milestone; the factory overview gives 297 for the 964 generation.

Is a road Carrera RS automatically a Cup car?

No. Original competition manufacture needs its own identity evidence.

What is the production-count boundary for this profile?

Verified original 964 Carrera 2 Cup generation. Porsche’s later overview reports 297 cars for this generation; the 5,000th Cup milestone belongs to all generations combined. Competition cars are not added to the road Carrera RS count.
