2016 Buick Avista Concept: history and background

The Avista gave Buick a striking grand-touring coupe proposal ahead of the 2016 Detroit show. Buick’s original January release connected it to the marque’s performance history and the design vocabulary of the preceding Avenir. The low roof and long, uninterrupted body lines made a different statement from the practical crossovers in Buick’s production range. It was a physical show-car project, not a factory option package for a contemporary Regal.

Design and engineering

The stated concept drivetrain combined a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6, 400 horsepower, an eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. Buick also described Magnetic Ride Control and a future interpretation of its connected cabin interface. Its 2+2 layout preserved some rear accommodation without changing the coupe’s sporting proportions. The photograph records a later Vancouver show appearance of the concept, which does not alter its 2016 introductory year.

Model identity and rarity

The original Avista project is the archive identity used here. No customer build total, acceleration time or exact worldwide prototype tally is manufactured from the published power figure. The engine rating is explicitly Buick’s concept specification. A public show appearance demonstrates the physical object and its design, but does not provide the testing record required to certify every advertised technology or its performance under production-car conditions.

Collector significance

The Avista’s significance is the modern expression of an enduring Buick ambition: combining strong performance ideas with comfort and visual restraint. Its relationship to the Avenir is a design connection, while the older turbo Regals offer a separate production-performance comparison. Those links give readers useful context without implying common hardware. A credible archive preserves the actual show car, original manufacturer proposal and named photograph rather than inventing a limited production run that never existed.

Read this 2016 Avista Concept beside the 1985 Buick Wildcat Concept and 2015 Buick Avenir Concept to place its 2+2 grand-touring concept coupe in context. The related entries retain their own years, model identities and production scopes, so their figures are not added to this record.

Frequently asked questions

Was Avista a production Buick coupe?

No. This profile represents the original concept project and does not claim a retail production run.

Where does the 400 hp figure come from?

It is Buick’s published rating for the concept’s twin-turbo V6, not an independent road-test measurement.

Why is a 2017 show photo used for a 2016 car?

The source records a later Vancouver appearance of the 2016 concept. The project’s introductory date remains 2016.

Why is the Avista Concept included as a rare Buick?

Original physical 2016 Avista concept project; no certified global prototype tally and no retail Avista production total. The scope is tied to this specific year, body or original project. It does not confer the same rarity on every car carrying the broader Buick Concepts name, and it does not describe how many survive today.

What records help identify an individual Avista Concept?

Begin with the documented year and 2+2 grand-touring concept coupe. Read the original model/body identification and surviving factory or collection records together. Record replacement components and restoration work separately. For a concept or racing car, its physical-car provenance is especially important; for an optioned production model, retain the equipment paperwork.

What photographs and credits accompany this profile?

The bundled photograph is retrieved from named Wikimedia Commons file records. Each image has a visible photographer or archive credit, its own licence link and an accurate subject caption. The pictures illustrate the documented model; they do not establish ownership, present condition or every component’s originality.
